Lost control of the situation?

Published: Thu, 10/13/22

Hi! Albie here. Lost control? I don’t know about you, but there have
been times in my life where someone or something seemed to
completely take away my control over the situation.

Let me share one of those times with you while I was out sailing:

The wind did not seem to be blowing extraordinarily hard this evening.
The sails pulled the boat happily toward the harbor entrance without
cause of concern. We sailed past a little island in the harbor and
suddenly things began to change.

The wind became stronger and the boat took off with more speed.
The wind pulled the jib and mainsail hard and for a while all was
still under control. That is until I attempted to turn the boat left, directly
to the harbor exit. For some reason, the boat would not listen.
No matter how hard I pulled at the tiller,
I could not get the
boat to go to port (left). Something had to be done!

Well, I reasoned, maybe the strong wind in the sails was
overpowering the tiller! Yes! That was it.
So I pulled out a
sailing trick and pulled hard on the jib sail, pulling it super tight
and making it like a wall against the wind (instead of like a conductor).

This worked for a moment but then that moment passed and the
wind funneled around that sail like it wasn’t even there
(and continued it’s evil and obstinate domination of the situation lol)

Over and over I tried again and again but we we’re still heading
the wrong direction - directly toward the sea wall and
toward an imminent crash.

Fear welled up in me and for a second I began to panic and think of
a last resort. Unlike cars, a boat could not just stop! I knew I might
just have to take all sails down and even though it would slow the boat
down and probably stop a crash it was a lot of extra work that I could
avoid if I could just get the sails to comply.
 And I would be stopped
dead in the water also...

I tried again one more time. This time I knew that in order for the boat
to give way, I would need to open up the main sail fully and try and
get the wind to take full control of that sail and leave off of
the jib completely.

Again I pulled on the jib sail and then pulled the tiller with all my
might so that the main sail would catch. Suddenly it worked and
we were moving to port! The main sail took over control and blocked
the jib completely. I took a big breath again and smiled.

The danger was over - if I just paid attention and didn’t steer the
boat off track that is.

I needed to remain focused on making sure that the main sail continued to
have complete dominance and that the jib was not able to get control again
and pull us back toward the wall. Finally the ocean met us and with it came
the sea breeze blowing from a slightly different direction. I was free of that
dominating wind that blew in the harbor!

I hope you enjoyed reading about this little adventure I had one evening
while going out sailing! Maybe you’ve been in a similar situation?
Maybe it wasn’t a fight with the sea but with a person in your life?
I know I have been in similar situations as that too.
One where you
felt a complete loss of control and heading towards the “rocks”.
I’d be very curious how you made it out from under their control!

I know working online can seem like this at times too!
No matter what you do, you can’t catch a break!

I hate to say it like this but it’s all about understanding the rules.
Just like it all had to do with my understanding the wind, so it all has
to do with understanding how internet marketing works and doesn’t work

But now you have an advantage that I didn’t have
(either with my boat or working online): someone to personally help you!
